About this research
Ortus Economic Research is doing this research in partnership with Abacus 449 on behalf of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (North East LEP). The LEP is working in partnership with the Innovation SuperNetwork to run the Challenge North Tyne programme. This is an open innovation challenge project that fosters an openness towards innovation practice and which uses a mission-framework – establishment of specific challenges and concrete targets that act as a frame and stimulus for innovation. The evaluation project will help the North East LEP and Innovation SuperNetwork to understand the impact of the programme on participants, explore the effectiveness and success of the programme and understand how it has contributed to the wider innovation ecosystem.
The North East LEP is a public, private and education sector partnership. It is one of thirty-eight LEPs in England and is responsible for promoting and developing economic growth in the local authority areas of County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland. The LEP produces the area’s Strategic Economic Plan, which acts as a blueprint for the activities that need to take place to improve the area’s economy.
The Innovation SuperNetwork exists to connect businesses in North East England with the opportunities, finance and support needed to innovate and grow. It is supported by 60 partners, including the North East LEP, all five regional universities and other high-profile organisations across the public and private sectors.
The data controller for this research project is the North East LEP – see Contact below. The data controller ‘determines the purposes and means of processing personal data’. The legal basis for this research is ‘public task’ – the processing is necessary for the North East LEP to perform a task in the public interest or for its official functions, and the task or function has a clear basis in law.
You have been asked to take part in this research because you have taken part in the Challenge North Tyne programme. The research includes online surveys, as well as individual and group discussions. You will not be asked to provide any personal details about yourself as an essential part of completing the research, although details such as your name and role in the business may be mentioned as part of your dialogue with an interviewer or facilitator. You may be asked to give your name and contact details for the purposes of follow-up research. You do not have to give any of these details if you do not want to.
Taking part in this research is voluntary and you have the right to withdraw from the research at any time – see Your rights below.
How your data will be used
The online surveys are confidential. The North East LEP and Innovation SuperNetwork will not know you have taken part in online surveys and will only receive aggregated data (which means your data will be mixed in with the views of other participants in the Challenge North Tyne programme) and research reports will only contain anonymous data (which means neither you nor your organisation will be named, nor identifiable from any of your answers). If you have asked to be guided through the questionnaire by an interviewer, your name and contact details will be used to organise a suitable appointment, but will not be part of your survey responses.
You will be invited to participate in the survey by the North East LEP, who already hold your contact details. Your contact details will not be shared with Ortus Economic Research.
We may invite you to participate in round table discussions which will involve North East LEP, Innovation SuperNetwork, challenge supporter organisations and potentially other organisations from the Innovation support ecosystem. These research events will therefore involve all parties being willing to express their views in response to a range of questions and discussion points. Any notes taken at the meeting will remain with Ortus Economic Research but may be shared with North East LEP and Innovation SuperNetwork.
How we keep your information safe
Ortus Economic Research and Abacus 449 use a wide range of technology to ensure that any personal data we hold is processed, stored and transferred in a secure way. This includes encryption, password protection and limiting access to personal data to key staff only. We regularly review our processes, hardware, software and policies to ensure we maintain personal data securely.
Your data will not be transferred to a country outside the EU.
Your rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), individuals have rights over their personal data and Data Controllers have a responsibility to fulfil these rights. Your rights include:
- Withdrawal of consent – you have a right to withdraw from the research at any time. Any personal data will then be deleted from any research study or database in which you are identifiable.
- Access to personal data – a right to access personal data that is held by Ortus Economic Research or Qa Research.
- Amendment to personal data – a right to have any personal data held about you amended.
- Erase personal data (‘right to be forgotten’) – a right to have personal data erased.
- Object to processing – a right to object to processing in certain circumstances
- Restrict processing – a right to restrict the processing of personal data in certain circumstances. This means that an individual can limit the ways that an organisation uses their data. It is different to requesting the erasure of personal data.
You have the right to make a complaint to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) if you are unhappy with the way Ortus Economic Research or Abacus 449 processes your personal data. The ICO can be contacted at ico.org.uk or by calling 0303 123 1113.
