North of Tyne Business Survey

Thank you for agreeing to take part in this research.

This page contains information relevant to this research project that has to be made available to you in order to comply with data protection legislation (Privacy Information Notice).

About this research

Ortus Economic Research is delivering this project with Qa Research on behalf of the North of Tyne Combined Authority, Newcastle City Council, North Tyneside Council and Northumberland County Council. The research has been commissioned the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA). The research will help NTCA and the three local authorities to understand local businesses’ ambitions and challenges as the North of Tyne economy recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, adapts to changing trade arrangements with the EU and other countries, and faces new challenges associated with global inflation and rising energy costs. The research will help NTCA and the local authorities to assist employers by helping to ensure that local business support provision reflects their needs.

Qa Research is a Market and Social Research Company based in the UK. Qa Research’s company registration is 3186539 and their registered address is: Merchant House, 11a Piccadilly, York, YO1 9WB.

The North of Tyne Combined Authority is a partnership of the three local authorities (Newcastle, North Tyneside, and Northumberland) and a directly-elected Metro Mayor. This partnership allows the three local authorities to collaborate more effectively in achieving their vision of a dynamic and more inclusive North of Tyne economy.

The data controller for this research project is NTCA – see Contact below. The data controller “determines the purposes and means of processing personal data”. The legal basis for this research is “public task” – the processing is necessary for NTCA and the three local authorities to perform a task in the public interest or for its official functions, and the task or function has a clear basis in law. Local authorities have a legal duty to provide support to local businesses and communities (among a range of other duties); the combined authority enables the three North of Tyne local authorities to work together.

You have been asked to take part in the research because you are able to answer questions on behalf of your business. You will not be asked to provide any personal details about yourself as an essential part of completing the interview, although details such as your name and role in the business may be mentioned as part of your dialogue with the interviewer. You may be asked to give your name and contact details for quality control purposes, for the purposes of follow-up research, or to take part in a prize draw for respondents. You do not have to give any of these details if you do not want to.

Taking part in this research is voluntary and you have the right to withdraw from the research at any time – see Your rights below.

How your data will be used

If you have been contacted by telephone, all calls will be recorded from the moment the call is connected. Once we have explained our reason for calling you (to carry out research) and you have expressed an interest in taking part, we ask for your consent to us recording the rest of the call. We will delete your data within 12 months of the end of the research project.

If you are responding online, your responses will be stored and then deleted within 12 months of the end of the research project.

For research purposes:

This research is confidential. This means that, for the purposes of this research, your business’s identity will only be known by Ortus Economic Research and Qa Research. NTCA, Newcastle City Council, North Tyneside Council and Northumberland County Council will not know you have taken part and will only receive aggregated data (which means your data will be combined with the views of many other businesses). Research reports will only contain anonymous data (which means your business will not be named, nor identifiable from any of your answers).

For quality control purposes:

We always like to ensure that people who take part in our research have had a good experience. Qa Research checks the work of its interviewers to ensure they are following the MRS Code of Conduct, and to comply with the requirements of ISO 20252, the International Standard for Market and Social Research, to which Qa Research is registered. Qa Research is the data controller for personal data collected for the purposes of quality control, and the lawful basis for using your data in this way is Qa’s legitimate interest. Access to personal data collected and used for quality control purposes is strictly controlled and limited to Qa Research employees on a need to know basis. Data collected for quality control purposes will not be passed on to Ortus Economic Research, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership or North East Skills Advisory Panel, or any third party. Qa Research only keeps your data for as long as it is needed for quality control purposes.

For prize draw purposes:

If you consent to enter the prize draw for respondents, your contact details will be stored so that we can manage the draw and notify the winner.  Your details will be deleted no later than 3 months after the draw has been made.

For further research purposes:

If you consent to be contacted for further research in the future, your contact details will be shared with NTCA and your appropriate local authority (e.g. if your business is located in Newcastle, your details will be shared with Newcastle City Council but not North Tyneside Council or Northumberland County Council).  Your responses to this research will not be shared.

How we keep your information safe

Ortus Economic Research and Qa Research use a wide range of technology to ensure that any personal data we hold is processed, stored and transferred in a secure way. This includes encryption, password protection and limiting access to personal data to key staff only. We regularly review our processes, hardware, software and policies to ensure we maintain personal data securely.

Your data will not be transferred to a country outside the EU.

Your rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), individuals have rights over their personal data and Data Controllers have a responsibility to fulfil these rights. Your rights include:
